Reintroduction of Analog Notetaking

As 'digital world' gets more overwhelming, overloaded and alienating each day, the art of analog note taking is my best refuge from screen overload. Outforms is a non digital technology, a sort of analog productivity system, but without toxic productivity and cliches. This system uses five basic forms — circle, timeline, square, map, and mount. These are basic andthey help with any creative notes and bullet journaling, but they also act as standalone tools for enhancing writing productivity and sparking curiosity exercises.

Circle / Clock. Mind Mapping Essential

The circle is the starting point for many Outforms techniques. Simple yet profound, it helps to write out any ideas within a continuous loop. When using mind mapping, circles can serve as central nodes, holding main ideas from which other thoughts radiate. For example, in a team meeting, each circle could represent a core topic, allowing the group to explore interesting ways to handwrite and express related ideas. Circles can really turn abstract thoughts into understandible plans. To me they are a cornerstone of any second brain solution. I don't mean Obsidian or Notion. As my recent keynote says, all you need is (any) pen and paper.

Timeline: Progress and Possibilities

Timelines are essential for tracking progress and envisioning futures. Unlike linear notes, timelines provide a dynamic view of events and tasks. They are particularly useful for journaling techniques, helping users visualize their journey and identify patterns. In an art newsletter, a timeline could trace the evolution of a project, displaying milestones and upcoming deadlines, capturing the essence of digital minimalism.

Square: Structuring and Organizing Information

Squares create order out of chaos. They define boundaries and prioritize tasks. This form is vital for bullet journaling, offering a framework to systematically capture daily tasks and goals. In a classroom setting, teachers can use squares to outline writing prompts and lesson plans, providing students with a clear, structured approach to learning. The square is your go-to tool for bringing clarity and focus.

Map: Exploring Connections and Contexts

Maps go beyond geography; they explore relationships and contexts. In my techniques of visual note taking, maps can illustrate how diverse elements interconnect and make much more holistic understanding. For example, in a business strategy session, a map might plot market trends and customer pathways, revealing opportunities for growth and innovation. Maps help dissolve boundaries, inviting exploration and discovery in analog productivity systems.

Mount: Building Hierarchies and Perspectives

The mount form, with its triangular structure, elevates thoughts into hierarchies, clarifying priorities and goals. It is ideal for guiding writing productivity and setting strategic objectives. For instance, during a curiosity exercise, the mount could depict the hierarchy of ideas, showing the progression from simple concepts to complex theories. It provides a bird's-eye view, offering new perspectives.

Outforms’ versatility allows for integration and adaptation. Each form can be combined into a comprehensive system or used independently to suit specific needs. Whether you're engaged in analog note taking or looking for any unusual or unique journaling benefits, Outforms offers an innovative approach to creative expression.

I believe that using those forms in new ways will uncover a world of possibilities for every creative, professional or enthusiast. Outforms is not an app, not a tool, not a gadget. To me and people around, it serves as a cool pathway to new ideas, to deeper connections, and a richer understanding of your world. This way you can transform everyday tasks without dull digital second brain solutions, and develop a much more proactive, engaged mindset, to increase agency in anything you do, and be able to create everywhere, any time.

Each element—circle, timeline, square, map, and mount—can be the gateway to a more organized, creative, and insightful life. Dive into the art of Outforms, and let your journey of discovery begin.
